Lake Lanier Fishing ReportNot much has changed since my last report. Our boats have been out on trips everyday both north and south and the fishing has been very good overall. Mid-lake and south we are seeing some schools of busting stripers early and freelined bluebacks, Redfins, Spro Dawgs, and Spooks are all working.

There are also fish up shallow on reef poles and points early each day. After the sun gets overhead, we have done well on downlined bluebacks fished 20 feet deep over a 25 to 30 foot bottom on and just off secondary, slick bottom points.

Up north the water is warmer and your numbers of school size fish will be better, if you start downlining on points at daylight. There are a few big fish up both rivers and freelined gizzard shad will work best up there.

Shane Watson Guide Service Report (04-30-10). We've had boats out on guide trips everyday and many things are working on Lake Lanier. The topwater bite has been very good this week on bone Redfins and on the Spro BBZ-1. Freelined bluebacks have also worked well this week. On my boat, we have also done very well on downlined bluebacks fished 20-25 feet deep over a 25-40 foot bottom, on and just off points and humps.

Most of these downline fish have been 5 to 15 pounds, but the action has been great. Some of our boats have also done well on freelined gizzard shad both up north and down south. I have fished mid-lake and south everyday and caught stripers in every creek that we have went in. They are really bunching well in places.

Several of you have asked for me to show a photo and give my opinion on the new Lowrance Elite 5 graph and Elite GPS. I was able to take a quick photo while were catching downline fish. It has 4,000 watts of power and works very well. It works like the pre HD units, but with an improved screen and easier features than the old models. I like it because, like the old LCX units, once you set it, it requires no adjustment other than adjusting your manual depth scale if you wish. I use a stand alone Elite 5 fishfinder and a stand alone Elite 5 GPS. The gps also works very well. It updates quickly and is easy to use.

Shane Watson Guide Service Report (04-20-10).

The last couple of days, the topwater bite has been strong on Lake Lanier. It is so great to see big stripers and spots blowing up on a surface lure and on a freeline. I spent most of last week rigging my new Sea Chaser boat and got back on the water on Friday. We spent a couple of days out over the main channel freelining and caught some nice fish, but there just wasn't enough out there yet.

The last 2 days, we found stripers up in 2 to 8 feet of water and caught them well on Bone Redfins, Spro BBZ-1's, and on Spro Dawgs. Fish as many points and reef poles as you can, and cast your lures up very shallow. Freelined bluebacks are also working well.

Just a quick report. The bigger stripers were back up shallow today on Lake Lanier. The blowups on the freelines were amazing.

The customers that were on my boat today, caught and released stripers up to 35 pounds on regular size Hammond's bluebacks. The fish pictured above was 35 pounds and was released to live another day.

Thomas wanted me to mention that starting April 1st, Bluebacks will be 4.99 per dozen. This report is brought to you by Shane Watson Guide Service www.lakelanierstripers.com, Hammond's Fishing Center, and Carolina Skiff Boats. Good Fishing.

Warmer days and nights have got the trees and flowers blooming around Lake Lanier. The surface temps are also rising and both stripers and spots are continuing to move up shallow.

Over the last week, our boats have had quite a few 20 to 30 catch and release striper trips. We've also had a day or two, when they have not bit as well. That's just the nature of spring time fishing with it's ever changing weather. Freelined bluebacks and Spro McSticks continue to produce the most fish.

Look in the middle to the rear of creeks and keep casting your lures to the bank while freelining. These Spro McSticks are working very well if you are on the fish. Keep dragging your freelines, make long casts, and you will come across some. We have gotten many calls and e-mails about how to fish this lure.

Our best success has been, to cast it as close to the bank as possible. Most days a medium to fast retreive has worked best on the stripers. Some days, a medium to fast retrieve with a short pause has worked well. Honestly, if you are on decent numbers of active fish, you can't do anything wrong with this lure.

Shane Watson Guide Service Report (03-17-10). The stripers have been on fire the last couple of days. Our boats have caught stripers up to 30 pounds this week on Spro McStick Jerk Baits in spooky shad pattern and on freelined bluebacks.

Fish points in the middle to the rear of just about any creek. The north and southend are equal right now.

The water temps that I saw today were 50-53 degrees.

The store is getting in a shipment of the spooky shad McSticks in the morning.

Shane Watson Guide Service Report (03-09-10).

Since my last report, the surface temps have begun to rise on Lake Lanier and the bigger stripers are moving up shallow. We have been catching 15-25 pound stripers, up in 5 to 10 feet of water on big freelined bluebacks and on jigs.

We have also hooked a couple of really big fish this week for our customers, one we never stopped and one that pulled out about 150 yards of line, got up under a dock and we could not get it out of a Christmas tree. I could see this fish well and it was at least 40 pounds. We tried to pull up the tree and get the fish, but it broke off and swam away. It always amazes me how far a 40 pound plus fish can run.

There are fish in the rear of most creeks with stained water and up both rivers. Over the next 6 weeks or so, more and more big stripers will be moving up shallow.
