COLLEGES
Brenau University
Brenau University was chartered in 1878 as the Georgia Baptist
Female Seminary, known late in 1890 as the Georgia Seminary and
Conservatory of Music. In 1906, the name became Brenau College
Conservatory. Brenau is formed from the German word "brennan", which
means "to burn" and the Latin word "aurum", meaning "refined gold".
Brenau continues to provide challenging and superior educational
programs for students enrolled in its three divisions, the Women's
College and the Evening and Weekend Program.
The Women's College offers majors in over 30 fields and the
assessment-based curriculum ensures that all graduates have acquired
specific knowledge, skills and competencies in core studies as well as
academic disciplines, before graduation. Brenau maintains a low
faculty-to-student ratio to ensure that students receive individual
attention in the classroom setting. The majority of students reside in
residence halls or live in sorority houses. The Women's College
attracts a number of international students and offers English as a
second language for students needing additional assistance in
developing their English skills.
Evening and Weekend Programs were introduced in 1970 to meet the
increasing educational needs of working men and women. Students
enrolled in these programs can earn a bachelor's or master's degree at
the Gainesville campus or at several other locations in Georgia.
Students may transfer credit to either of the colleges and may also
earn credit through the College Level Examination Program(CLEP)
administered by the Office of Career Planning and Placement.

baccalaureate program leading to a Bachelor's of Science degree in
nursing. The department is accredited by the National League of Nurses
