The Forrest Wood Cup is the "Super Bowl of Fishing" and its coming to Lake Lanier in August. This will be the largest event held in the Lake Lanier area since the 1996 Olympics. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected with the winning fisherman receiving a $1 million prize. The tournament will be held at Laurel Park on the north side of Gainesville from August 5th through August 8th. The Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will celebrate its 14th year in 2009. The race has grown from a handful of teams and a few spectators to an event which is one of the hallmark diversity events in the metro Atlanta area. The event now boasts a field of more than 50 teams with over 5,000 spectators and a wide variety of Chinese artisans either performing or displaying their wares. The Lake Lanier Association’s holds an annual fundraising event at PineIsle Resort at Lake Lanier Islands. 2009 will be the 7th time the event has been held.The event is open to the public costs. Taking part costs around $150 per person. Sponsors donate prizes for various award winners, including best score, second best score and challenge winners. The Tour de Georgia is a U.S. professional cycling stage race across the state of Georgia. Its main aim is to benefit the Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Lake Lanier hosts a Bluegrass music festival called "Grass in the Grove" in SeptemberThe festival run all day and features both traditional and contemporary bluegrass bands. Where is the Festival? Once a year, the Lake Lanier Association rallies concerned citizens to help clean the shores of the lake by picking up trash and removing Styrofoam.  Each year, hundreds of volunteers participate in Shore Sweep.  Since its inception, civic groups, youth groups, individuals and businesses removed from twenty five to fifty-five tons of trash annually from Lake Lanier. 2008 was the association's 20th Annual Shore Sweep. Volunteers work for several days and remove trash from the shoreline around Lake Lanier. People on the shore are helped by boaters and barges in removing heavy debris. Benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County, the Rubber Duck Derby is a lot of fun. 1000s of rubber ducks adorned with sunglasses and painted lips hit the water at Clarks Bridge on Lake Lanier for a race to the finish line. People donate from $5 for a single duck up to $100 for a pack of 25. The Polar Bear Swim is an annual fundraising event held by the Lake Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club. On the afternoon of News Year Day, people jump into the lake, despite the freezing temperatures. Jumpers compete for a variety of prizes from best jump and best constume to oldest and youngest jumper. 2011 will be the 14th Polar Bear Swim.
