Lake Lanier saw some raindrops yesterday but it was not enough to keep the lake from continuing to drop. The lake level is still over 4 feet from full pool. The summer heat is taking a toll on the water level by slowly evaporating millions of gallons of water per day. A small drop in the lake level represents a lot of water spread across a very large area. Since June 14th, the lake has dropped half an inch. The current lake level is 1066.64.
Lake Lanier is getting some rain this morning and there are supposed to be some scattered thunderstorms later in the day. The rain will restore the small increments of evaporation that has occurred during this week's hot weather. Looking more long term, the judge that is residing in the court battle over the water in Lake Lanier, is expected to make a decision around the end of the summer. The judge will decide whether or not Northeast Georgia and Atlanta have rights to use the water in Lake Lanier for drinking water. Last night, the 1071 Coalition heard from Jerry Barnes, the Corps manual update director that is pushing for the Corps to revise the decades-old water management manual. The 1071 Coalition is also performing a study on the economic impact the water level has had on Lake Lanier businesses. The economic study has revealed that the water level drop had a very high impact on the lake area economy.
I will monitor the lake level today and post updates as the rain continues to move in.
