An interesting article in the Gainesville Times this weekend about vacation rentals on Lake Lanier.

Apparently dozens of homes in Hall County are being rented out "illegally". The county wants to charge a tax on rentals because they say that renters are technically hoteliers.

The Gainesville Times has a great article on ethics reform and gifts from lobbyists to legislators.

Unfortunately, they left out one of the most egregious offenders.  James Mills has accepted gifts from the Georgia Realtor’s Association and the Georgia Banker’s Association.  Both groups have paid for he and his family to take trips.  One trip was so nice that he forgot that his grandfather died while he was gone.  Mills claims that he missed the Lake Lanier Association forum because his grandfather died; however, the truth was he was on a vacation to California paid for by the Georgia Banking Association.  One minute looking at campaign disclosures and old news articles would have revealed this to reporter Ashley Fielding.  Left on Lanier was proud to see the report mention the lobbyist gifts to Rogers and Collins, but come on share the love.  They ain’t the only crooks in town.

Congrats to my friend Mitch Freeman. He is an art teacher at Gainesville Middle School but is increasingly recognized for his own art.

The Gainesville Times has a frontpage article this morning about his entry into a major London exhibit:

I have been very critical of the Hall County SPLOST. I voted against it, and wrote about my reasoning on January 27, 2009:

At this point, the tax isn’t used to fund special projects, it’s used to “cover up” the misplaced priorities of our county government. Need a new landfill? Sure do! But instead of funding it properly, they’ll put it into a SPLOST so that the voters have to decide whether to fund the landfill or not.

The Gainesville Times details pissed-off Flowery Branch residents who might have higher water/sewer rates soon:

Residents protested in late 2008 after a proposed fee schedule would have doubled sewer rates for residents in the Sterling on the Lake, Village at Deaton Creek and Reunion communities. The change would have meant going from a flat rate to one based on usage at $9.87 per 100 cubic feet.

We caught this blog post at the G-ville Times blogs.

The issue is pretty simple. The owner of a double wide trailer will be losing her home to a tax sale for one years back taxes. Other homeowners with several years of back taxes are not losing their homes to a forced sale.

Handy map from CNN that illustrates the Georgia Banking Devastation™.

It neatly illustrates that Georgia tied for the most bank failures in 2008 and is leading all states in 2009. Why is this important?

There are a few dedicated media folks in this county who read Left on Lanier. Their insight is cherished regardless of my personal feelings toward their place of employment.

That being said, what possible excuse is there to give such a pass on Nathan Deal?

So this weekend, I took the time to read two online articles.  Both were on the same subject:  Nathan Deal and the Lake.  You can read them here and here.

Both of these articles put Mr. Deal in a good light.  One even had a picture of Mr. Deal crusading for Georgia’s water rights from the well of the House of Representatives.
