There are many terms used by boaters that are worth while in learning. This can be overwhelming for boaters just starting out.
Knowing these terms and their definitions can be much to your advantage. These terms can also be boat specific, but don't shirk learning them.
Some boats have terms specific to their use, but learning them all is still important. There are courses you can take online, pertaining to boating, where you will find all of these terms.
1. Overboard - When you are in a boat on any body of water, what is outside of the boat or off of the boat is called overboard. If you fall into the water you have fell overboard.
2. Portside - If you are facing the fron of the boat, the left side of the boat is the port side.
3. Tide - The ocean levels rise and fall, from the moons gravitational pull. On earth, this causes ocean levels to rise, as when the tide comes in.. or when the water levels drop is referred to when the tide goes out.
4. Stem - The very most froward part of the boat (the front of the bow)
5. Navigation - Seaman term for traveling from one point to another, accomplished by charting the course before you start your voyage, and then following your plan.
6. Wake - When a ship or oat travels trhough the water it disturbes it, causing waves and a trail to form for a distance behind the boat.
7. Port - The left side of vessel when you are facing the bow.
8. Man Overboard - When a crew or passenger falls off the ship, this is deemed an emergency and "Man Overboard" is called out to the entire ship in an effort to rescue the victim who fell into the water.
9. Aboard - If you are with in or somewhere on the boat, you are aboard the boat.
10. Deck - The floor on which the crew and passengers walk on.
11. Starboard - If you are facing the bow of the boat (front) on your right side would be the starboard side.
12. Longitude - In the measurement of degrees east or west of Englands Meridian of Greenwich is called Longitude.
13. Latitude - In the measurement of degrees north or south of the Equator is called Latitude.
14. Navigate - When you plot, chart and execute your boat trip, from one destination to another, you have nagigated a course.
15. Bearing - An objects direction designated on the chart as it's true bearing, or in relation to the boats heading, it's realative bearing.
16. Capsize - The act of the sea vessel over turning in the water.
17. Flood - Incoming water currents,usually from an unwanted opening, on a boat usually unless corrected, is a precurser to the boat sinking.
18. Overboard - If you fall off the boat, you are overboard.
19. Latitude - South or north distance from the Equator, measured by degrees.
20. Longitude - West or east of Englands Meridian of Greenwich, measured by degrees.
21. Galley - Where a crew member or passenger can go eat while onboard a boat. The food is prepared there as well by trained cooks, or maybe you or your wife?
22. The Stem - The forward most forward part of the bow.
